Columbia River Valley Lookout

This compact residence in Golden, BC marks the studio’s first ground-up residential project. Completed in January 2023, the design responds to a brief calling for a simple, vertical form that rises above the surrounding forest canopy, capturing expansive views from the upper-level living spaces.

Inside, 14-foot ceilings amplify natural light and create a sense of openness, giving the modest footprint a more generous spatial quality. The building’s massing lifts the primary living levels above a solid concrete podium, anchoring the structure within the landscape while reinforcing its vertical presence.

The material palette is restrained and durable: concrete forms the foundation and floors, blackened wood clads the exterior, and steel defines the roof and balcony. The balcony is expressed as a sculptural element extending along the façade, while a steel staircase continues this language inside, linking the interior and exterior.
