Pink Geranium

Located on Galiano Island, this historic cottage—once home to the Galiano Lodge and the long-standing Pink Geranium restaurant—has been reimagined by Twobytwo Architecture Studio in collaboration with Jesse Keefer, owner of the Pink Geranium and Bodega Ridge Resort.

Formerly known for its home-style cooking, the Pink Geranium has been transformed into a café and grocery serving the island’s north end. The renewed space offers baked goods, prepared foods, and locally sourced products, establishing a contemporary community hub while maintaining its longstanding role as a gathering place.

The design approach focuses on revitalization through material and craft. Locally sourced, natural materials are used throughout, reinforcing a strong connection to place while supporting regional trades. The renovation balances improved functionality and efficiency with a sensitivity to the building’s existing character.

Key elements of the original interior are retained and reinterpreted. The inglenook—an intimate seating area centered on the original fireplace—has been restored as a focal point, anchoring the space with a sense of continuity and warmth.

A restrained base palette is enlivened with botanical tones. Pink tile defines the service counter, while green millwork frames the retail displays. Lighting by Bocci is arranged in organic compositions, contributing to a soft, garden-like atmosphere.

The project is deeply rooted in collaboration and craftsmanship. Jesse Keefer played an active role throughout, including fabricating custom exterior shingles, while local millworker Dan Danku crafted the inglenook seating and rear patio overlooking a historic orchard. Chef Elmark Andres animates the space with a menu grounded in familiar, home-inspired cooking.

While the building footprint remains unchanged, the interior has been fully reconfigured with accessibility in mind. The front entry grade has been raised to provide universal access, and a fully accessible washroom is integrated into the plan.

The renewed Pink Geranium establishes a vibrant, everyday destination—strengthening community connections while offering a welcoming and adaptable space for residents and visitors alike.
