Nelson Residence

This compact residence just outside Nelson is conceived as a highly efficient home for a young family of four. The form is driven by the logic of the plan, organizing a double-height living space with a primary suite set within an adjacent mezzanine.

The remaining program is consolidated on the main floor, with all rooms oriented toward southern exposure to capture light and views. The building is partially set into the sloping site, improving thermal performance and providing protection from prevailing north winds.

A restrained exterior expression reinforces the project’s performance goals. High-efficiency wall and roof assemblies, combined with a compact form and limited articulation, are designed to meet Step Code 5 of the BC Energy Step Code—the highest level of residential efficiency in the province, equivalent to Net Zero Ready.
