Prairie Residence

This long, low single-family residence draws from the principles of prairie architecture, responding to the expansive, flat landscape in which it sits. The building is organized as a simple linear bar, articulated at its center to form a protected, south-facing courtyard directly connected to the primary living spaces.

Orientation is central to the design. Openings are directed to the south and west to capture extended views and daylight, while the north elevation remains more solid, shielding the home from prevailing winter winds. Deep roof overhangs moderate solar gain during the summer months and help manage snow accumulation in winter.

The material palette emphasizes durability and longevity. A robust concrete base anchors the structure, while vertical steel cladding defines the upper volume, allowing the building to weather naturally over time and sit comfortably within its surroundings.
