Interlock (a Vancouver Infill Concept)
Located in Vancouver’s new R1-1 multiplex zoning, this project explores an experimental approach to densification through a system of interlocking volumes. The design organizes four levels of program within a three-storey building with basement, maximizing spatial efficiency while maintaining a compact building form.
Each level is conceived as a distinct volume, creating varied spatial conditions and a dynamic overall massing that integrates with the surrounding urban context. All units are provided with access to private outdoor space, complemented by shared amenities that promote interaction and community at the rear of the site. The project combines qualities typically associated with single-family homes—such as privacy, access to outdoors, and spatial variation—with a higher-density housing model.
The spatial organization is driven by the arrangement of interlocking forms, generating a range of interior conditions through shifts in ceiling heights, room volumes, and window openings. These variations enhance access to light and create differentiated living environments across units, from more expansive garden-level spaces to upper-level units with multiple private patios. This approach balances efficient planning with opportunities for spatial complexity and outdoor integration.
